Sarah Perse is a human wreck. Burned badly from an IED explosion during the Iraq war in 2004, she now lives a hermit's life in a small town in northern Idaho. Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, too much drinking, and drug abuse, Perse serves as the town's nemesis and doesn’t care much whether she lives or dies.

While sprawled on the street after a night of drinking, Perse meets her next door neighbor's young daughter, Suzy, and something extraordinary happens.
